Effects of Social Media to Kids

My kid was 9 years old then, when he asked me to create a Facebook account for him since most of his classmates do have the account. But, with my protective instinct against exploitation and exposure to the unwanted news, images and alike, I strongly discouraged him against  Facebook.

But, my justification was compromised when his very own teacher asked them to create the account for learning.

Now, he has to ask to open his Facebook account for some updates.

So, is social network really good for our kids? In a plenary talk entitled "Poke Me: How Social Networks Can Both Help and Harm Our Kids", Larry D. Rosen, PhD, professor of psychology at California State University, Dominguez Hills, cited that the kids may have positive and negative benefits from social networks. These negative effects include psychological disorder, depression, harassment, exposure to sexting (texts of sexual content), and low grades for chronic users.  However, social networks may as well foster social skills, empathy for online friends and an effective tool for learning.

Technology is inevitable but as parent, we can only guide our kids and make sure that they don't allow social networks to interfere with school performance, to cause any psychological problems or to allow themselves for exploitation.
